ASU (advocado soybean unsaponifiables) consists of the unsaponifiable fractions of avocado and soybean oil and contains biologically active phytosterols, beta-sitosterol, capesterol, and stigmasterol. In vitro studies show that ASU have inhibitory effects of IL-1 (interleukin-1) and stimulating effects on collagen synthesis. ASU accordingly protects against joint pain and inflation and prevents the degeneration of synovial membranes, joint cartilage and subchondral bone. ASU appears to suppress the catabolic function of subchondral bone osteoblasts and may assist in the repair of damaged osteoarthritic cartilage. Pre-clinical studies standardised ASU dietary supplements, demonstrated anti-OA properties including reduction in joint pain and other associated problems.
